The x402 Foundation formed. The adoption numbers are still contested.
Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Stripe joined a neutral standards body for agent payments — while independent measurement questions what 100 million settlements actually represent.

A standards body for machine payments
In July 2026 the x402 Foundation was convened as a neutral venue for the HTTP-native payment standard that agentic wallets increasingly settle through. Reporting at the time put the membership around forty organisations, with Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Stripe among premier members, a technical steering committee established and a search underway for an executive director.
The significance is not the protocol text. It is that card networks and a payment service provider agreed to work on an open agent-payment standard in the same room, rather than each shipping a proprietary authorization scheme.
The volume story
Chainalysis reported that agentic payments on Base crossed 100 million transactions in roughly three quarters, surging from near zero in Q3 2025 before moderating in early 2026 — with much of the growth attributed to meme-coin farming activity. It also noted that transfers of $1 or more grew to about 95% of volume transferred, up from 49% in early 2025.
The counter-measurement
A July 2026 arXiv preprint measuring x402 on Base at population scale argues the settlement count cannot be read as adoption at all: gas is sponsored by the facilitator and nothing on-chain marks who controls a payment, which makes the headline metric close to free for an interested party to manufacture.
Both things can hold. A standard can be consolidating institutionally while its usage statistics remain a poor proxy for autonomous economic activity. Operators sizing an agent-payments integration should price the rail on its authorization semantics, not on transaction counts.
